Live Blog: Plymouth Argyle vs Notts County - Final thoughts

Argyle continue their fine run of form in the League Cup, exiting at the first stage for the third year in a row. Neither the fans, the players nor Peter Reid are likely to be too bothered about the Greens elimination, but the lack of attacking potency against teams that set up defensively at Home Park is a worry and could prove to be a problem that takes a while to solve. Furthermore, tonight's result and performance punctures some of the good feeling that came out of Saturday's result and a promising pre-season. I almost regretted listening to the game, so I can only imagine how the 5,000 who actually attended felt. Still, a good result on Saturday and all will be well once again.

Argyle create a couple of late half chances, but County survive. Arnason launches a long throw into the Magpies penalty box, but the ball dribbles behind for a goal kick. And that's that, as the final whistle is blown to a few half-hearted boos.

An unintentionally amusing closing statement from the Radio Nottingham commentator:

Notts County are in League Two...round two of the Carling Cup...

The official attendance is 5,454, which isn't too bad all things considered. Meanwhile, more niggly fouls and free kicks continue to break up the play as the game limps to it's conclusion. The crowd are now making plenty of noise, most of it aimed at the referee. We'll have five minutes of injury time.

Sparksy's disappeared again, as Steve Maclean receives a booking for a yellow card. Notts County are attempting to make their final change, but the fourth official is having a bit of bother with the electronic board.

Some scores from elsewhere: Exeter 2, Ipswich 2, Leicester City 4, Macclesfield 3.

An Arnason long throw leads to a chance for Maclean in the Magpies' penalty area, but the Scot drags his shot wide after a smart turn 18 yards from goal. Five minutes for Argyle to find an equaliser and force extra time.

Steve Maclean brings the Home Park crowd to life with his first touch, smashing an instinctive shot goalwards which is blocked by the chest of Stuart Nelson. Funny old world, isn't it?

Argyle have a bit more momentum as we enter the last ten minutes, however, with Noone receiving more and more of the ball on the right wing. Omnisor Bhasera receives a yellow card for a mistimed challenge, which prompts a rousing rendition of 'You don't know what you're doing' from the home fans, aimed at Mr Tanner.

There is precious little happening at Home Park as the minutes tick away. John Spicer is withdrawn by Craig Short with Kevin Smith coming on. The lack of impetus from Argyle. along with the two substitutions made so far, would suggest that Peter Reid is not overly bothered about the Greens' progress in this particular competition. Nonetheless, you never want to lose your first home game of the season.

Craig Noone delivers a corner for the Pilgrims, which drops just behind Bradley Wright-Phillips in the County penalty area. Argyle then make their final change, as Steve Maclean replaces Fallon. There's some cheers as Rory's number appears on the board. It's not been one of the New Zealander's better evenings.

Craig Noone is the first player to go into referee Tanner's book after catching Craig Westcarr with a high boot. Argyle take advantage of the stoppage to make a change, with 16 year old Curtis Nelson making his debut. Anton Peterlin makes way for the youngster.

Two Magpies players then go into the notebook in quick succession - Ben Davies and the goalscorer Spicer are shown yellow cards by Steve Tanner.

We've finally got Sparksy and Steve Davey on Radio Devon, who are discussing the amount of free kicks conceded by Argyle tonight and brightly coloured football boots.

County take an age over a corner kick, which is cleared by the Greens backline. The visitors are unlikely to hurry anything in the next half an hour, but referee Steve Tanner is already looking displeased at the idea of any timewasting.

Argyle are struggling to create anything at the moment. Maybe it's time for Summers to come off the bench?

Live Blog: Plymouth Argyle vs Notts County - Goal! 52 minutes

Notts County grab the lead at Home Park, as midfielder John Spicer cracks an effort past Romain Larrieu and into the Argyle net after some fine work from striker Ben Burgess. That's Spicer's first goal for County on his first full appearance for the club.

Craig Short then makes his first substitution, withdrawing the busy Burgess for Jake Jervis. Can Argyle respond to conceding that goal?

Hurrah! Sparksy! The Radio Devon feed is now working....accept we now have commentary on Exeter vs Ipswich. Deary me.

We return to Radio Nottingham as Rory Fallon cracks a volley narrowly wide of Stuart Nelson's post. Peter Reid has made one change at the break, with Jim Paterson replacing Lee Molyneux. The former Everton and Southampton man full-back has done well in his 120 minutes on the pitch considering his lack of a proper pre-season.

County win another free kick in a shooting position, which is deflected clear. Argyle then break through Noone, whose dangerous cross is scrambled away by the Magpies. There's a bit more about the game in the opening stages of the second half.

Live Blog: Plymouth Argyle vs Notts County - Half time

The first half ends as the referee's whistle is met with lukewarm applause from the Home Park faithful. As on Saturday, the Greens have been super-solid at the back but, again like Saturday, have looked less than incisive going forwards - Argyle have failed to get any of their five efforts on goal on target.

Still, this one is still for there for the taking. Back in a few for the second half.

The Magpies have had a little more of the play in the last few moments, keeping the ball well in their own half. Two opportunities have fallen to County's Ben Davies, who is struggling to keep the ball down - both the midfielder's free kick and shot from a corner fly clear of Romain Larrieu's crossbar.

The Greens, who have lost their way somewhat in the last twenty minutes, almost snatch the lead on the stroke of half time as Craig Noone fires a shot wide of the target, before Bhasera makes a crucial block from Westcarr in the Argyle penalty area.

The tempo of the game has dropped over the last few minutes with Argyle, as ever, hitting the frontmen early and conceding possession too easily. The Radio Nottingham commentators are surprised that the Greens seem to be lacking confidence, especially considering Saturday's result. Nonetheless, the Pilgrims remain the only side creating chances as Duguid's half-cleared cross is limply poked wide by Anton Peterlin.

As irritating as it is that the Radio Devon commentary feed is working, it is interesting to listen to another radio station's perception of Argyle. The Radio Nottingham commentators sound pleasantly surprised that their side are keeping up with the Pilgrims. That would seem fairly pessimistic, considering the Greens home form over the past couple of seasons, but it might be something Argyle can use to their advantage over the next few months.

Argyle are starting to click now, as Noone slides a ball across the face of goal, somehow evading both 'keeper Stuart Nelson and the lurking Wright-Phillips. It's been a busy start from BWP, who is no doubt looking to make an impression after failing to make the bench at St. Mary's.

There's been a fair bit of long ball stuff from Argyle so far, which is hardly making the most of the snooker table like surface they're gracing. To be fair, it's proving quite successful so far with County, who shipped three against Huddersfield on Saturday, looking rather jittery at the back.

Talking of Huddersfield - Damien Johnson is one of the good guys.

The Radio Notts commentary team are convinced that the Magpies are having the best of this, but a free kick floated over the bar is their only attempt on goal so far. Argyle create another opening however, as BWP fires an effort wide after the Notts County defence make a mess of an Argyle long ball.

Arnie advances upfield to hurl a long throw into the County box, which the visitors succesfully defend. We only saw a couple of those on Saturday. Wright-Phillips is coming more and more into the game meanwhile, hurrying and harrying the Magpies defence.

Bit of a hitch to start with - Argyle Player isn't working, so we're following the Radio Nottingham commentary.

A fairly scrappy start, with a lengthy stoppage in the opening couple of minutes as County's Craig Westcarr goes down with an injury.

Argyle create the first opening of the game, as BWP tees up Craig Noone to flash a shot wide of the target. The Notts County commentators are surprised that Bradley didn't feature on Saturday; they're also shocked that the new pitch cost £500K. It's surprising Munto Finance didn't buy them a new one.

Evening.

So, after masterminding a tremendous opening day win at St Mary's (match report coming soon) Peter Reid tonight takes charge of his first match at Home Park as Argyle play hosts to Notts County in the first round of the Carling Cup. What's more, this will be the first game played on the brand spanking new Home Park pitch - head over to Greens on Screen for all the lovely pictures.

The Greens will line up as follows:

Argyle (4-4-2): 1 Romain Larrieu; 2 Karl Duguid, 5 Réda Johnson (C), 11 Kári Árnason, 34 Lee Molyneux; 17 Craig Noone, 6 Chris Clark, 21 Anton Peterlin, 15 Onismor Bhasera; 10 Bradley Wright-Phillips, 14 Rory Fallon. Substitutes: 3 Bondz N'Gala, 20 Luke Summerfield, 29 Jim Paterson, 31 David Button (gk), 32 Steve MacLean, 35 Curtis Nelson.

Interesting to see that Reda is named captain ahead of Arnie, whilst Marcel Seip only makes the bench.
